Step 1: Preparation
First, I chose a large canvas and drew a sketch of appropriate dimensions on it.
I prepared the necessary materials: brushes, oil paints, canvas, palette, oil paint thinner, cloth, etc.
Step 2: Ground Layer
I applied a lightly toned ground color to the base of the canvas. This layer allows the colors to hold better later on.
Step 3: Creating the Composition
I arranged the main elements of the table, placing the picknickers, the table and the food. I added elements of nature in the background.
Step 4: First Layer Colors
I set the basic colors of the main elements and painted large areas with large brushes. The details have not yet been added.
Step 5: Adding Details
I started to add details like people’s facial expressions, the patterns of their clothes, the textures of food.
I used finer brushes to create the details.
Step 6: Lights and Shadow
I identified the light sources and shadows in the painting. This helped me to give it depth and volume.
I worked on the color tones to highlight the lights and deepen the shadows.
Step 7: Background Details
I completed the background, adding natural elements such as trees, grass, sky.
I paid attention to perspective and color tones to give a sense of distance.
Step 8: Final touches
I finished the painting with the final touches, making final checks and correcting any missing details or details that needed to be corrected.
Step 9: Varnishing
I varnished the painting to protect it and give it a shine. This also makes the colors look more vibrant.
